The top two seeds of the tournament were determined following Saturday’s winner-take-all showdown between Georgia Southern and Georgia State in Atlanta, Ga. The Panthers earned the No. 1 seed and the regular-season championship with a 72-55 win. The Panthers finished the year 22-9 overall and 15-5 in Sun Belt Conference play. Georgia State won the regular-season title for the second consecutive year.
Georgia State earned a double bye to the semifinals by virtue of being the No. 1 seed and and will play in the first semifinal game at 1 p.m. CT on Saturday. The Eagles, by virtue of finishing second in the league with a 21-8 overall record and 14-6 conference record, also earned a double bye and will play their first game on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. CT.
The UL Monroe Warhawks (20-11, 14-6) captured the No. 3 seed for the tournament. The 20-win season was the 11th in UL Monroe’s history and the first since the 2001-02 season. The Warhawks will play their first game at 7:30 p.m. CT on Friday, against the winner of an opening round game between No. 6 seed South Alabama (12-19, 9-11) and No. 7 seed UALR (13-17, 8-12).
The defending Sun Belt Conference tournament champions, the UL Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns (18-12, 12-7*) clinched the No. 4 seed following a win on Thursday night. UL Lafayette is the hottest team in the league as it rides a five-game winning streak*. The Ragin’ Cajuns play their first game of the tournament on Friday at 5 p.m. CT against the winner of No. 5 seed UT Arlington (16-14, 10-10) and No. 8 seed Texas State (13-16, 7-13) (*Prior to Saturday night’s games).
The opening round of the 2015 Sun Belt Conference Men’s Basketball Championship tips with the showdown of No. 5 seed UT Arlington and No. 8 seed Texas State at 5 p.m. CT on Thursday. The nightcap features No. 6 seed South Alabama vs. No. 7 seed UALR at 7:30 p.m. CT. The winners of those games advance to Friday’s quarterfinals.
The winners of Saturday’s semifinal games at 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. CT advance to the championship game which is set for a 12 p.m. CT tip on Sunday March 15. The game will be nationally televised on ESPN2.
