Eagles Earn No. 2 Seed for Sun Belt Tournament

NEW ORLEANS (SunBeltSports.org) – The seeds and pairings for next week’s 2015 Sun Belt Conference Men’s Basketball Championship, hosted at the Lakefront Arena in New Orleans, La., have been determined following the conclusion of the conference’s regular-season slate of games Saturday evening. The tournament begins on Thursday, March 12 and ends with the Championship Game to be played on Selection Sunday, March 15.

The top two seeds of the tournament were determined following Saturday’s winner-take-all showdown between Georgia Southern and Georgia State in Atlanta, Ga. The Panthers earned the No. 1 seed and the regular-season championship with a 72-55 win. The Panthers finished the year 22-9 overall and 15-5 in Sun Belt Conference play. Georgia State won the regular-season title for the second consecutive year.

Georgia State earned a double bye to the semifinals by virtue of being the No. 1 seed and and will play in the first semifinal game at 1 p.m. CT on Saturday. The Eagles, by virtue of finishing second in the league with a 21-8 overall record and 14-6 conference record, also earned a double bye and will play their first game on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. CT.

The UL Monroe Warhawks (20-11, 14-6) captured the No. 3 seed for the tournament. The 20-win season was the 11th in UL Monroe’s history and the first since the 2001-02 season. The Warhawks will play their first game at 7:30 p.m. CT on Friday, against the winner of an opening round game between No. 6 seed South Alabama (12-19, 9-11) and No. 7 seed UALR (13-17, 8-12).

The defending Sun Belt Conference tournament champions, the UL Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns (18-12, 12-7*) clinched the No. 4 seed following a win on Thursday night. UL Lafayette is the hottest team in the league as it rides a five-game winning streak*. The Ragin’ Cajuns play their first game of the tournament on Friday at 5 p.m. CT against the winner of No. 5 seed UT Arlington (16-14, 10-10) and No. 8 seed Texas State (13-16, 7-13) (*Prior to Saturday night’s games).

The opening round of the 2015 Sun Belt Conference Men’s Basketball Championship tips with the showdown of No. 5 seed UT Arlington and No. 8 seed Texas State at 5 p.m. CT on Thursday. The nightcap features No. 6 seed South Alabama vs. No. 7 seed UALR at 7:30 p.m. CT. The winners of those games advance to Friday’s quarterfinals.

The winners of Saturday’s semifinal games at 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. CT advance to the championship game which is set for a 12 p.m. CT tip on Sunday March 15. The game will be nationally televised on ESPN2.

All games of the 2015 Sun Belt Conference Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championships will be available live on ESPN3.
