STATESBORO, Ga. (WJCL) — A local hangout for several college-age residents near Georgia Southern – and the location of one tragic turn of events in the last year – is up for sale.
University Plaza, the home to multiple bars near the Georgia Southern campus, is currently on the sales block for $5.5 million according to realty site, StatesboroProperties.com.
The site reports that the nearly 2.4 acre location is currently home to “7 different bar and grilles with alcohol licenses, restaurants and a convenience store.”
The location also has history given that Zaxby’s opened its first store there. Now a Zaxby’s is being built nearby.
But the location has also seen one tragic event in the last year – the beating death of Georgia Southern student Michael Gatto by a bouncer at the now defunct Rude Rudy’s bar.
The incident caused a major backlash among the campus and Statesboro communities that led to a crackdown on alcohol sales checks in the community.
The incident also preceded the closing of Rude Rudy’s bar.
It’s a large sum of money by any standard, but realtors mark the easily accessible location and the continuously growing Georgia Southern campus mere yards away as great selling points for the ubiquitous location.
The center also backs up to a campus-owned dorm.
