A total of six millilion dollars is up for grabs.
With its efforts to revitalize South Main Street and maintain a lively downtown, Statesboro has become one of 50 America’s Best Communities quarterfinalists. The top three finalists will receive awards of $3 million, $2 million and $1 million.
Frontier Communications, DISH Network, CoBank and The Weather Channel are sponsoring the America’s Best Communities competition nationally. Statesboro applied as a community served by Frontier.
“This is such a great place to live and work, and everyone at Frontier is so proud to serve this area,” said Jaclyn Cason, general manager in Frontier Communications’ Statesboro office. “With continued hard work and ongoing support from neighbors, I believe that Statesboro has what it takes to win America’s Best Community.”
She made the quarterfinal win announcement Thursday at the Averitt Center for the Arts’ new Mical Whitaker Black Box Theater on West Main Street.
The first-time competition, “challenges small towns and communities to create master plans and drive economic development and innovative growth,” Cason said.
Launched in September, the contest drew 138 applicant teams representing 347 communities across the country. An independent panel of experts in various economic development fields judged the applications, Cason said.
Statesboro is the only quarterfinalist community in Georgia. Geographically, the nearest competitor is Georgetown, South Carolina.
